AVENUE OF FLAGS

Prior to 2016, a separate nonprofit, Avenue of Flags, Inc., flew flags along La Canada Drive in Green Valley. Green Valley Council’s Community Services Committee coordinated with Avenue of Flags to help with the day’s flag raising and lowering on flagpoles spaced along La Canada Drive. The Green Valley Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers (SAV) also participated in these activities to ensure the safety of volunteers and motorists traveling the flag-raising route during early morning and evening hours. Unfortunately, this nonprofit lost its charitable status in 2016 when it could no longer maintain its membership.

The GVC Foundation, an affiliate of the Green Valley Council agreed to continue the coordination of these activities with the  SAV. In 2022, the Avenue of Flags was recognized as one of four long-term charitable committees supported by the Foundation. SAV volunteers, Richard Grimmie until 2022, and Don Fern, starting in 2023, were appointed Chairs of the Avenue of Flags Committee and worked with volunteers to raise flags along the east and west sides of La Canada.  From Veterans Day 2024 through 2025, the Foundation is conducting a campaign to retrofit the Green Valley flagpoles with solar lights.  Under illumination, the flags will be able to fly at night, extending the display period and strengthening our community’s patriotic commitment. The Foundation is seeking funding for the initial conversion through sponsorships and grants.

We need YOU to help with the long-term maintenance of  the flagpoles and cleaning and/or replacement of the damaged poles and flags. Organizations, businesses, HOAs, families and individuals can all ADOPT A FLAGPOLE.
